Author's Notes: I tried to tackle the [info]ff_friday challenge about swords, and this is what came out. So totally not about swords. *sigh*

After their bloody battle with the Reavers, Jayne gave River a wide berth. It wasn’t so much that she scared him but...well, ok; he had to admit that in a lot of ways she did. He certainly didn’t want to be on the wrong end of those mean little hands of hers again. He wasn’t sure his balls could take it. Plus, it wasn’t like she got any less crazy once they’d told the ‘verse about what happened on Miranda. Gorram moon-brain still prattled on about stuff even her pompous brother didn’t understand and, for all Jayne knew, the girl had plans to kill them all in their sleep. Hell, Mal didn’t even let her pilot alone for fear she’d take the ship on some sort of suicidal joy-ride.

But, as scary as all that was, none of them were the reasons he kept her at arms-length. No, the truth was that Jayne avoided River because he didn’t want anyone to see just how much he admired her. So much strength, determination and skill all packed into one tiny, albeit fierce, package; and if he let himself look too long, he couldn’t help but notice what a fine little package it was. Those new and better-fitting clothes Inara gave her didn’t hurt none either.

Of course, when he wasn’t careful, his appreciation was plain as day, and Jayne knew that just wouldn’t do. So he kept to himself, barely acknowledging her presence even when she tried her damnedest to piss him off. But every night as he fell asleep that girl was the last thing Jayne thought of. He couldn’t help it; after all, her deadly axe and sword glittered, even in the dim light of his bunk, where they sat in their place of honor just above his bed.

  • Shiny! This was really good. :-)
  • Mmmm. Weapons. They make me happy. :)

Awww, this was nice! You know I'm not a Rayne shipper, but I really liked this.
    • Thank you!

I wasn't really sure when I labeled it Rayne, that's why I went back and changed it to Rayne-ish. If nothing else, it was supposed to be more of a friendship-fic.

And me? I'm a Jayne-shipper. I love him paired with any and everyone...and one of these days I am going to actually WRITE that damned Jayne/Book ficlet I keep threatening everyone with.
      • and one of these days I am going to actually WRITE that damned Jayne/Book ficlet I keep threatening everyone with.

Eww! Ew ew ew!! *runs to take shower*
        • BWAHAHAHAHA!

I know, it kinda squicks me too. But I have a goal: To pair Jayne up with all the main characters on the show--and maybe a few of the supporting characters.

I can't help but wonder what Jayne thinks of the Twins when they're making out and inviting him to join them; or what would happen if YoSaffBridge tempted him into sex that somehow ends with them all kidnapped; or what his and Marco's relationship was REALLY like before he defected.

            Now there's an idea! *g*
          • Ok. Now I want to read *all* of them.

            hehe

            hell, I'll read {anyone}/Jayne.

  • I love it when someone pulls out River's Reaver weapons to play with.
Ain't no ruttin' way Jayne would have left them behind, even if River dropped them.
  • Love. Love. Love.
  • I love the idea of Jayne keeping her weapons!
  • Cool, Bug. She really is a fierce tiny package, and Jayne would totally admire that. And he kept her weapons? Heh.
