Title: What If (1/?)
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing, etc: River/Jayne
Prompt: # 82 "If" for
fanfic100
Rating: PG (Here there be angst)
Disclaimer: Jayne is all mine. Yes he is. Uh huh. Shut up. Yes he is. *fingers in ears* Lalalalalalalalalalalala
Author's Notes: So--ok, yeah. A little embarrased to admit this but: Inspired, in part, by an episode of Danny Phantom (just don't, please? Kthnx).
"You want her, don't you?" River asked, near to tears.
Jayne, confused, quickly swallowed the shot of whiskey and turned to look at his very pregnant wife. "You ain't s'posed to be here. And what?"
Unwavering, River motioned to the whore making her way around the crowded bar Mal had chosen as the meeting place for their next job. "You. WANT. Her."
"Don't want no one you, Baby-girl," he protested.
"Lies do not become you. Tall, blonde, buxom...NOT FAT!"
Jayne snorted, shaking his head. "You're preggers, not fat. And I know you got them hormone-y things goin' crazy--so how 'bout you go back to the ship? I got work to do and over there you can blow off whatever it is that's got you so worked up."
"Saw you looking."
Sheepishly his gaze wavered from her knowing eyes. She had him there. "Well, have to be dead not to look River."
"You'd rather be with her than with me."
"I never said--"
River opened her mouth, but Jayne cut her off, "Or DIDN'T say, no such thing! You're my wife, and while there's plenty a man who'd do that kinda thing, I ain't one."
"Forsaking all others," she mumbled. "Oath given keeps you chained."
"Yeah. I mean, NO!" he protested. "Not the whole of it, and you should know that by now." Spying their contact as he walked into the bar, Jayne turned to her and asked, "Can we finish this later?"
"NO!" she yelled, trying unsuccessfully to cross her arms over her chest.
Frustrated, and knowing Mal would take him to task later for not being in his assigned position guarding the door and the rest of the crew, Jayne huffed loudly and whispered hotly, "River, girl--sometimes I wish you weren't so damned crazy."
With tears spilling over her chocolate brown eyes River slapped him. "And sometimes I wish I had never met you," she hissed. Wrapping her arms under her enormous belly she ran out of the building.
**************
"River, wake up!" Simon called.
With a groan the girl realized it was time to rise and face the day. And to deal with Jayne's inevitable, but rightous, anger at her outburst. She couldn't help it, he HAD been looking at the whore; combine that with the the fact that her husband hadn't touched her romantically in weeks--well, it was enough to send her over the edge. Dress it up and blame it on the hormones, insecurity, jealousy--whatever. She was still wrong to have confronted him like that, and especially there and when he was trying to do the job that kept them fed and sheltered.
Feeling the sun shine through her window and warming her skin, the wind as it caressed her face and hearing the birds chirping in their early morning glee, River sighed and stretched langourously. Then, sitting up, she decided that she would do whatever she needed to do in order to make it up to him.
Sun. Wind. Birds. Stretching.
Something was terribly wrong with all of that.
In a panic the girl snapped her eyes open and felt her heart drop to her feet as she realized that she was in her childhood bedroom, in her parent's house on Osiris. Breathing hard and fast, her eyes wide, River looked around frantically trying to figure out what had happened, why she was here.
Her brother knocked on her door and, opening it, told her, "Come on sleepyhead! You're going to miss the transport to the Academy. Can't be late for your first day."
River glanced down to where the sheet had fallen into her lap, then darted once again to look at a smiling, happy, carefree and very much younger looking version of Simon. She felt nauseated, dizzy...
Rising to her knees River wrapped her hands into the long strands of her hair and pulled with all her might, all the while screaming uncontrollably.

While re-reading it I got an idea for a second part...will prolly work on that tonight, too.
And like I just said up thread: I got a bunny for another part to this--actually, typing this I got an idea for a third part as well.
Now, to see if they pan out...
No promises, but we'll see.
Also: Your icon makes me giggle.
mmmmmmmmm
(not sayin')
This is- this is like that episode of Buffy where the demon sticks her with a needle and she wakes up in a mental institution. Creepy!
My brain took over and this has gone places I didn't think it would so maybe I need to lable this AU now...
I'm sure I've confused you more, no doubt, lol. ;)
*kicks shit everywhere*
Well, gotta re-think it now. FUCK!
FUCKITYFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Looking forward to the next bit!
*rubs hands together*
My plan is working perfectly, muwhahahahaha!
And it should be too long of a wait...
OMG. Wow. Definitely bring new meaning to be careful what you WISH for. I wonder if I am reading too much into this but, it's pretty hinky that she wishes she never met Jayne and poof she's back in time. Like I said maybe I am reading too much into the W word.
Doing that to River would just be too much like re-writing the eps; and too much work (don't laugh, I hate writing). She wished she had never met him, not that she never knew him, see the difference?
And HE never wished for either, only that she wasn't so crazy.
Soooo, I figured I'd combine the two. You'll see...
M Night Shyamalan. Good stuff. can't wait to read more ;)
